The Beatles' worldwide career originated in Hamburg, when Beat Music emerged at the STAR-CLUB, the Indra, Kaiserkeller, and the Top Ten in the St. Pauli district, a type of music labeled the 'Hamburg Sound‘ by its contemporaries. Fierce competition as well as the aspiration and talent of those young musicians created – in a very short period of time - a new musical trend which was to be incredibly successful in the sixties all over the world inspiring numerous musicians and paving the way for today's pop culture.

 This grand exhibition shows the genesis of Beat Music in Hamburg by way of stage productions, photos, film, documents, original objects, and - naturally – through the music of that time. It presents its famous and lesser known representatives and the places of their stage appearances. Authentic musical instruments of those celebrated musicians, Astrid Kirchherr's Beatles portraits, works created by Stuart Sutcliffe, the "primeval" Beatle, innumerable memorabilia and a reproduction of the  STAR-CLUB stage incorporating original parts will create a living impression of yesteryear's music scene.

At the same time, the social background is shown in which this far-reaching change in musical history and youth culture took place. All fields are covered from fashion to consumer behaviour, from the style of living to student protests.

The exhibition is accompanied by releases of a lavishly illustrated book, a film, as well as a CD featuring the best known music tracks of the "Hamburg Sound“. The opening weekend (3-5 June, 2006) will bring an international memorabilia vendors' market with added talk shows, autograph sessions, appearances by lots of musicians and many more top attractions.

An extensive side program comprises, among other items, guided tours – also multilingual – through the exhibition and to the Beatles-related places of interest in St. Pauli, special and vacation programs for children and young people, as well as more appearances of known musicians plus band contests.
